Four UVM seniors from electrical engineering and mechanical engineering worked throughout the 2019-2020 academic year in response to Professor Holmen's design request: a drone-integrated greenhouse gas sensor system with 1Hz real-time data display. From garage testing of the drone's downwash to weekly meetings in the lab to brainstorm ideas and tweak designs, many Solidworks drawings, run-ins with the FabLab's 3D printers and those in student apartments (who knew?), the team made excellent progress and a physical prototype emerged for presentation to Professor Rand on 13 DEC 2019. The team demonstrated the prototype's ability to measure gases in real-time, but the work ahead for Spring semester would include the pumping and intake systems (ME students) and data processing system integration with the open-source drone. Unfortunately, COVID-19 stopped this amazing student team's work and the second half of the Spring 2020 semester was "remote", no lab work. Still, the team -- working with great dedication from their apartments -- made great strides with this year's design (see drawing - shows package that afixes to drone).
